Denali Highway 200K

Start Date: Sat, 05/24/2014

Description: Perhaps one of the longest dirt road randonnées in North America. Awe-inspiring views of Mt. Deborah (+12,000), Hess (+11,000), and Hayes (+13,000). Bring your 'cross bike w/ extra beefy tires, or ride your MTB with 2.1s.

This is a family-friendly event done along side the Alaska Endurance Association's Denali Classic Gravel Grinder. It's all about grassroots rides! Bring the gang. There are plenty of trails for them to explore while you're out on one of the rides. Please plan on joining your fellow riders for a post-ride potluck on Saturday evening, and a Sunday morning farmer's breakfast. Please bring something to contribute. Also, bring lots of firewood for the community flame.

There's a mandatory safety meeting in the Brushkana Campground on May 24th, 8:00PM the evening before the ride. Riders are required to wear helmets, and have operational front and rear lights Lights must be used between dusk and dawn. Riders must not ride more than 2 abreast.

All controls are open controls. As is the nature of randonneuring, these rides are always unsupported. You are on your own. This is a committed course on a remote section of Interior Alaska. Know your limits. Fenders with mud flaps are strongly encouraged, or you'll face the scorn and abuse of your fellow randonneurs drafting you when the skies open up or when the roads become muddy. This is also a great time to try out lights, bags, racks, food, etc. Rear lights, in non-flashing mode only, are strongly encouraged for every ride. Remember, the spirit of randonneuring emphasizes self-sufficiency. If your derailleur cable breaks, you gotta fix it. Also, it's your responsibility to have your brevet card properly completed at each control point. DO NOT LOSE YOUR BREVET CARD!

Please be polite/courteous/civil to convenience store attendants. It's your responsibility to know the Alaska state and local road laws. Ride no more than two up. White light front, red light rear between dusk and dawn.

The controls are far apart. The Denali Highway is very remote country. Consider bringing the following:
1) Bear Spray
2) Water filter
3) Camelback

Most Important: All riders are reminded that any failure to conduct the ride in accordance with RUSA rules (www.rusa.org), applicable laws, or any special instructions or equipment requirements for this ride may result in a time penalty or disqualification. Sorry, I had to say that. Right now would be a good time to read RUSA's Rules for Riders (http://www.rusa.org/brvreg.html) Also, you've got to wear your helmet.
